Design and realization of a half-open single-family residence.

This residence is the last house of a subdivision in Riemst. We succeeded at getting the maximum from the compact parcel of land by clever use of the space, the location of windows and the inclusion of the environment.

Inviting beacon
The half-open residence appears to be separate from the other residences in the row because the garage, which is attached to that of the neighbours, was given siding that is a different from that of the main volume. Thus the black box serves as a connection and, at the same time, as a visually dividing element between the two residences. The diagonally placed pent roof of the main volume starts from the low garage volume and runs to the higher level of the landscape. Thus the residence forms a beacon for the subdivision and at the same time invites the landscape into the interior. The architect made use of the landscape by placing the master bedroom at the attic level. Thus, upon waking in the morning, the resident looks out over the tops of the trees. Each season provides a new experience.

Carefully considered privacy
All areas in the residence are optimally used. On the ground level, the designer played with differences in level, which makes the residence very interesting spatially. This is expressed beautifully in the kitchen, that is located on the street side. Here the floor level is reduced locally to the level of the crawl-space. In combination with a front garden sheltered by a hedge, the kitchen enjoys a pleasant patio that supplies much daylight, and yet privacy is preserved. The living area at the back is also open to the Haspengouw landscape.
