House
La Roche-en-Ardenne 2012

Design and realization of a country house.

This holiday residence, which can be refitted later as a permanent residence, is located at the edge of a green valley. This fact was the starting point for the design. The residence is perfectly integrated in the surroundings and provides maximum relationships with the surrounding greenery.

Building materials typical of the region, such as Ardenne undressed stones and natural slate, define the appearance of the residence. The undressed stones emphasize the garages in the rectangular volume on the street side, whereas the slate siding emphasizes the elongated housing volume. In these black areas windows are randomly placed. Large windows in the front and rear aspect externalize the location of the living spaces. This concept, with the living room the complete depth of the house, establishes an interesting relationship between the residence, life on the street and the panoramic view of the Ardenne Valley. Wooden beams bring rhythm to the open parts of the facade.

Contrast in wood
By finishing the roof surface and the facade in natural slate, the form of the residence is enhanced. The wooden exterior joinery provides a warm touch and contrasts with the hard facade materials.

The night section is organized as a split-level. Thus one bedroom and the bathroom are under the roof, two other bedrooms with a washroom are partially underground.
